My Testimony

Before I got saved I was a person who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, but because of the merciful compassions of our God, the rising sun visited me from on high and guided my feet into the way of peace (Luke 1:78-79). My father was an elder in a Presbyterian denomination, so I grew up in a Christian family and believed that Jesus was the Son of God. However, I hardly had any personal relationship with the Lord and my living was no different from the unbelievers. During the summer break after my junior year in college I went back home to attend a Christian meeting, which I learned later was a meeting of a local church raised up through the ministry of Watchman Nee. Many stood up in the meeting to testify of their experience of Christ. An elderly brother stood up later and spoke from the Bible. Every word he said was full of impact and deeply attracted me. He spoke on “The church as the Body of Christ” (Ephesians 1:22-23). I had never heard any message as profound as this in the denomination. He said that there were many members in the Body of Christ. All the members are in oneness and each has its function. God did not make all the members the same; each member is different. Romans 12:4-6 says, “ For just as in one body we have many members, and all the members do not have the same function. So we who are many are one Body in Christ, and individually members one of another. And having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or service, let us be faithful in that service; or he who teaches, in that teaching.”

When he said that God did not make all the members the same, I remembered that in my denomination everyone comes just to listen. On the contrary, in the local church meetings everyone stands up to speak and is full of vitality. From then on, I went to every single meeting. The Lord attracted me in this wonderful way. Soon, I knew the meaning of baptism, which was not a procedure ushering one into a denomination, nor was it a ritual. Baptism puts a person into the name of the Father, the Son and the Spirit (Matthew 28:19) and causes a union between the believers and the Triune God to transpire (Romans 6:3; Galatians 3:27). Sprinkling on one's forehead is not scriptural. Therefore I asked to be baptized in a meeting of the local church.

After my baptism, a couple of Christian sisters took good care of me. However, I had immigrated to a city on the east coast in the U.S. where there is no local church. I was hungry for the Lord and decided to attend a denominational church temporarily. I went back to the previous situation where there is some supply of the Word, yet deep inside of my spirit I still felt something missing. Eleven years later, the Lord brought me to San Diego where there is a local church. We found the local church from the list of all Christian groups in that city. It feels like we have come back home where everything is so bountiful. I no longer feel thirsty and hungry. He is indeed an all-sufficient God. What shall I want?! The element of God is being added into me day after day through the rich ministry of the Word. How enjoyable and how marvelous!
